Food & Beverage

cacao.jpgI love chocolate, and I can’t say I’m the most discriminating when it comes to what kind I buy. I’ll eat your popular at-the-counter variety or I’ll splurge on gourmet. I use to be a fiend for milk chocolate, but in the last few years I’ve developed a vicious craving for dark. Recently I discovered a new favorite - Cacao Reserve by Hershey’s in Extra Dark Chocolate with Cacao Nibs. The mix of 65-percent cocoa with bits of cacao nibs is a perfect blend - more semi-sweet than bittersweet.

Most gourmet chocolate bars will cost more than $2 to $3, but Cacao Reserve is a great value for $1.99. (If you live near a Super Target, check for the smaller four-square package on clearance for 68 cents. You’ll find it by the register.)

Get it: Great taste, excellent value, if you love dark chocolate but not the price, try Cacao Reserve. Look for it at your local grocer.

edys.gifOne word describes this product - YUMMY!

This is the perfect combination - orange sherbert and vanilla ice cream.  It is extremely refreshing and you can have an extra scoop because the ice cream is low fat.  This is a great dessert if you are watching your fat intake - there is only 2grams of fat in a 1/2 cup serving and only 120 calories.  The flavors are so wonderful together and the ice cream is so smooth, you will never realize that you are eating a fat free ice cream.

So pull up the spoon and enjoy my friends!

The best part is that there are so many flavors to choose from:

  • Berry Rainbow - combines the flavors of blackberries, raspberries and oranges
  • Key Lime
  • Orange Cream
  • Swiss Orange [ tangy orange sherbet with loads of rich dark chocolate chips
  • Tropical Rainbow - combines the flavors of pineapples, limes and oranges

I am all about saving time in the kitchen and I love buying the frozen chicken cutlets. The problem is that they all stick together, you can not pull out just one or two to use and then once they have thawed, you have to trim all of the fat away.

chicken.jpgSo I was so excited when I saw the new Perdue Chicken Tender and Tasty Individually wrapped chicken cutlets. What a great idea! You can thaw just the amount that you need, there is no mess and they are already trimmed. Plus I am a huge fan of Perdue chicken. The chicken does not taste frozen at all. I have used it in all of my recipes.

You can find them in the meat section with the frozen chicken and they also have them in the fresh area that are also individually wrapped and in a marinade. Talk about getting dinner done quickly.

So next time you are in your grocery store, look for this product, I am sure that you will be as happy as I am with it.

Ok so I am a self-proclaimed kitchen gadget freak! So when my blender died – I went on the hunt for a small appliance that I bella1.jpg

could use to make shakes and sauces. The primary purpose is for shakes, because my husband loves to make milkshakes, protein shakes, and smoothies. But I hate cleaning up the blender.

So I was in Macy’s and saw the Bella Cucina Rocket Blender– it was on sale for $29 not bad. I know what you are thinking; you are remembering shopgirlTanya’s not so favorable review of the Magic Bullet. And believe me, I was too, when I first saw this – but believe me when I say, this is nothing like the Magic Bullet. It is a hundred times better.

I love this blender, it is small and compact and incredibly powerful. It crushes ice without any problems. It makes the perfect smoothies and clean up is a breeze because you only have to remove the blade. You mix everything right in the cup so you only have two things to clean. Perfecto!

bella.jpgI even used it to make pesto and salsa and my food was chucky and not pulverized. Another plus is that it looks great, so you won’t mind keeping it out on the counter.

If you are in the market for a blender, give this one a try; I am sure that you are not going to be disappointed.

Find it at Macy’s

I love kitchen gadgets and I love to grill – so when I saw this appliance, I knew that I had to have it – The Griddler.

griddler.jpgI am a huge fan of Cuisinart appliances, so I had high hopes for this early on and let me tell you it has not let me down.

It is the most versatile piece of kitchen equipment that I have.  I use it at least 4 times a week.   You can make pancakes, press sandwiches and grill chicken.  It makes an incredible grilled cheese sandwich and my son loves for me to grill his peanut butter and jelly sandwich (probably an acquired taste!).

I have some friends that own the George Forman Grill and when they saw me using this, they went and bought one for themselves.  The best part is that it is so easy to clean that you want to use it over and over again.  After every use, you simply pop-out the cooking plates.  Did I mention that it was easy to clean - I love this feature!

Another plus is that the grill also lays flat, so you can cook for a crowd.   Whether you are using the griddle or grill, you are going to find a ton of different uses for this appliance that you will always want to leave it out on the counter.  I actually moved the Kitchen aid blender to the cabinet to make room for this, that is how often I use it.This would be a great gift for a wedding or bridal shower or heck pick one up just for yourself and get grilling!

OOPS WineOk so I am very far from a wine connoisseur, I am an enthusiast and in the process of developing and defining the different types of wine that I prefer. So I came across this wine the other day and thought that it looked interesting, ok the label is what originally attracted me – but of course you are going to look at a label that has (OOPS) written on it. So I grabbed a bottle of the Carmenere Merlot.

The wine is billed as Checky Little Red. That it is the lost grape of Bordeaux discovered in Chile masquerading as a Merlot! So I was intrigued and thought why not lets try it with some pasta.

I have to admit that I was pleasantly surprised. The wine was very smooth, full of a nice oaky flavor and was a great pairing with my ravioli dish.

This wine is not heavy at all and I think that it would go great with steak or even pizza. Check out there website and look at the other wines that they produce.
So go grab a bottle of (OOPS) and have a great night!

whole foodsI was driving to work the other day when I noticed a HUGE sign announcing a new Whole Foods store opening. It will be at Sand Lake and Turkey Lake roads, right off of I-4. A Spring 2008 opening is announced for this 50,000 square foot store.

Exciting stuff for those of us who like to shop there, but don’t have one close enough to our home. This should spread the wealth to the West side of Orlando.

preview_berry_bar.jpgI was totally sucked in by the cheerful advertisements and colorful packaging, score one for marketing. Armed with my buy one, get one free coupon, I checked both of my local Publix supermarkets for the product, but it wasn’t available yet. My mom found them in Walgreens. I was surprised when she told me they cost $1.29 each, and even more surprised when I tore open the package to find a snack bar half the size as I expected.

The 1.06-ounce bar has the texture of a fruit cake, but it delivers on taste. However, this tiny bar packs 130 calories, 2 grams of saturated fat, 17 grams of carbs and 12 grams of sugar. It will satisfy your hunger for a few hours, but I’d rather buy a box of Nature Valley Peanut Butter Granola Bars. For the price of two SoyJoy bars, I can get a pack of 6 granola bars with two bars in each package.

Try it, but only when you come across a buy one, get one free coupon, or the site offers them for free again. SoyJoy comes in four varieties: berry, raisin almond, mango coconut, and apple. I tried the berry and apple, and I liked them both.

no fudge.gifAre you watching your waistline but still craving chocolate, fudge and brownies? With these simple-to-make, quick-to-bake treats, you can have all three! At a measly 110 calories and zero fat, I’m sure you’re thinking these must taste terrible, but there’s a key ingredient that makes these brownies have a chewy, crave-satisfying taste — just mix one box of brownie mix with one six-ounce vanilla yogurt, pour it in a pan (don’t forget the cooking spray) and within a half hour you have some sweet goodness that won’t wreck your diet.

Get it! You’ll find No Pudge! Fudge Brownie Mix at Publix in the diet section for about $3.49. Each box makes 12 small brownies. The mix is available in original (my favorite), mint, capuccino, and raspberry.

v8.jpgSo I had a coupon for the V8 Splash Smoothies Tropical Colada and thought what the heck - let’s give this one a try. OH MY GOD - talk about YUMMY! Just add rum and you have yourself a nice little drink.

The flavors of the pineapple and coconut blend perfectly together and it is packed with vitamins, calcium and soy protein so you feel really good about what you are drinking.

I am definitely going to remember this one for the next party that I have - it’s cheaper then the traditional pina colada mix, much smoother and already blended.

Get it: At any local grocery store in the juice isle.
